Yoga Teacher Training Program –Seattle
with Ki McGraw & Bob Smith
About Seattle's 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program
Thank you for inquiring about Ki McGraw and Bob Smith's
200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Program. Ki and Bob have successfully
led fourteen training groups over the past 11 years and look forward
to leading another one. The next Seattle training is scheduled to
start in September of 2011 and applicants are now being accepted
into the program. Ki and Bob are accomplished Hatha Yoga practitioners
and meditators, with a combined teaching experience of 50 years,
who have put together a powerful set of two day weekend trainings.
All workshops will take place at the Hatha Yoga Center in Seattle
. The first four weekend gatherings will be: September 10th &
11th, October 1st & 2nd, November 5th & 6th, and December
3rd & 4th, 2011. New members can join into Bob & Ki’s
YTT during any of the first four weekends of training, provided
there is space available. In these weekend training sessions that
will continue through the winter and spring you will receive asana,
pranayama, and meditation instruction; as well as Yoga philosophy,
anatomy as it applies to asana practice, and many other pertinent
aspects of teaching Yoga. During the program you will learn to teach
Yoga safely and wisely, with many opportunities for student teaching.
Ki and Bob's Yoga teacher training program is registered by the
Yoga Alliance. As such, your certificate of completion from them
will allow you to register with this accreditation board which is
recognized world wide.
The instructional cost for the entire 200 hour training is $2,400.
Payment is to be made on a monthly basis of $140 per two day weekend
workshop that you attend. The weekend trainings will end in June
of 2012. There will also be individual tutoring that you do with
Bob and Ki by attending certain classes at the Hatha Yoga Center
and you will be able to choose these classes during the course of
your study in this program. There will be 20 hours of Yoga Anatomy
offered in the spring of 2012. You can enter this program at anytime
during the four weekend gatherings; after this we will not be accepting
new applicants. Asana practice and learning how to teach asana will
always be an important part of each weekend - some of the afternoon
subject matters for these weekends will include: pranayama, meditation,
lineage, the Yoga Sutras, the Upanishads, mantra and yantra, the
Bhagavad Gita, living the life of a Western Yogi – Yogini;
ethics, anatomy as it applies to asana practice, how to work with
injuries, and specific practices of teaching.
Ki and Bob have have only one main requirement before you can enter
their training program – this being that you have practiced
Hatha Yoga for at least two years before you can be admitted. One
other commitment they ask is that you practice Yoga daily during
the program. Finally, they ask that each graduating student submit
a video of a Yoga class they have taught before a certificate is
given. As mentioned earlier, the certificates Ki and Bob hand out
are recognized by the U.S. national Yoga board, the Yoga Alliance.
With the certificate you will be able to register with the Yoga
Alliance as a Yoga instructor.
To give you all the weekend dates of this Yoga Teacher Training
it is scheduled to continue with monthly meetings on
- September 10 & 11, 2011
- October 1 & 2, 2011
- November 5 & 6, 2011
- December 3 & 4, 2011
- January 7 & 8, 2012
- February 4 & 5, 2012
- March 3 & 4, 2012
- April 7 & 8, 2012
- May 5 & 6, 2012
- June 2 & 3, 2012
As previously mentioned there will also be 20 hours of Yoga Anatomy
– these meetings will take place in the afternoons during
the third weekends of March, April and May of 2012. To add up to
180 hands on hours with Bob & Ki (you get 20 hours for home
study) you will need to supplement these weekend trainings and Yoga
Anatomy weekends by attending classes at the Hatha Yoga Center as
a participant and tutor during these classes. The number of classes
you will serve as a tutor will depend upon you in terms of attendance
at the weekend gatherings. The charge when you serve as a tutor
in classes at the Hatha Yoga Center will be $16 per class
Asana Practice & Teaching Methodology
Principles of demonstration, observation, assisting/correcting,
instruction, teaching styles, qualities of a teacher and how to
become a good, safe Yoga instructor are all subject matters we focus
on. Lineage will be explored with respect regarding each student's
path. Throughout the training Ki and Bob will place a lot of emphasis
on teaching methodology, body reading and how to help all types
of students. Our style includes a lot of hands on adjustments and
corrections. As such it is necessary to emphasize safety for both
teacher and student in this process. Throughout the training Ki
and Bob will be instructing Hatha Yoga class each Saturday and Sunday
morning from 9:00 – 12:00 noon. By participating in these
classes with two teachers you will receive practical guidance and
live examples of all aspects of teaching. We will meet Sat. &
Sun. afternoons from 2:30 - 5:00 P.M. for meditation, philosophy,
lineage, and discussion of living the life of a Western Yogi. Bob
and Ki have been working for the Sufi Order International by digitizing
meditation talks of Pir Vilayat Khan and Pir Zia Inayat Khan. You
will be given many meditation talks by these two great meditation
teachers, as well as some very rich DVDs on yoga, lineage and Sufism.
Anatomy - Physiology Training
During the course of this training there will be 20 hours of anatomy
– physiology offered. The anatomy sections of this training
will generally take place on the third weekends of the late winter
and spring months at the Hatha Yoga Center. These will be afternoon
sessions and will be taught by Ki. This is a very important part
of the training. Ki is very dynamic in her presentation of anatomy
as it applies to yoga and teaching yoga. The book that will be used
to study will be ANATOMY OF MOVEMENT by Blandine Calais-Germain.
Many of your questions concerning particular issues of the body
that come up in Yoga class will be explored by Ki in her very interactive
approach to Yoga Anatomy. Practical understanding of bones, joints
and muscles as applied to asana – this is Ki’s approach
to this vast field of information. Injuries, conditions and problem
areas of the body will be discussed after initial understanding
is demonstrated. You will find this part of the training to be a
true delight.
Tutoring during classes at the Hatha Yoga Center
To fulfill your training you will participate in Yoga classes at
the Hatha Yoga Center and serve in a tutoring role with Bob or Ki
during this time. It would be best to find times when two classes
in a row are taught. Your main duty during these classes is to observe
the teacher, as well as practice with Bob or Ki. There will be a
brief discussion with the teacher of the class(es) after the class.
The amount of classes you need to attend in the tutoring role depends
on you. If, for instance, you attended all weekend workshops and
the Yoga Anatomy, then this would add up to 130 hours and so you
would need to attend 50 hours worth of classes as a tutor during
the course of the time you were in the program. This class attendance
could be spread out over length of time you were in the program.
For those signing up from out of the Seattle area we do have a loft
that you could stay at for $30 a night during times you drove in
to serve in the tutoring student role. If you miss certain weekend
trainings then you would need more classes serving in the tutoring
role to make up the hours.
Philosophy, Ethics & Lifestyle
Living the life of the Western Yogi will be an ongoing theme interwoven
throughout the training program. Many personal stories of our own
experiences in studying and teaching Yoga will be shared throughout
the training. During certain of the weekend gatherings the main
discussion will center on the issue of being a Yogini/Yogi in the
modern world. Text focus will include: THE UPANISHADS by Eknath
Easwaran; THE YOGA SUTRAS (you can choose the author of interpretation);
and THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOGI by Paramahansa Yogananda.
Ethics will be emphasized throughout the training program. We will
utilize the California Yoga Association for Yoga instructors, as
printed in the Yoga Journal, as a beginning point for this discussion.
With ethics as an underpinning Ki and Bob offer exercises about
mindful use of touch and giving corrections in Yoga classes. We
will also discuss licensing, insurance, injury in Yoga class, professionalism
with all students and colleagues and how to keep the Yoga space
safe when teaching.
Ki and Bob will dedicate some of the afternoon training sessions
to a celebration of the various styles of meditation. Within this
Yoga Teacher Training there is an invitation for you to reflect
on all the great traditions and embrace the unity that can be found
through the weaving and intertwining of the uniting messages. This
is an opportunity for you to truly unfold your spiritual life and
open up to much broader understanding of how the various spiritual
paths support each other. We will celebrate life by honoring the
great beings from all of the main religious paths.
Practicum
All students will have ample opportunity to observe us teaching,
as well as each other during student teaching exercises. Ki and
Bob will create smaller groups for the students to teach each other
and get feedback from each other concerning their teaching techniques.
Some student teaching and a whole lot of discussion about how to
see through the eyes of an observant Yoga teacher will be focused
on throughout this training. Our past graduates report this was
effective for their preparation for teaching.
Student Packets
At certain of the gatherings there will be written or recorded material
by Ki and Bob that will be distributed to help in your study of
Yoga. There will be certain “homework” assignments asked
of you. The writing exercises are meant to be interesting explorations
for you to record on paper. Ki and Bob encourage you to do daily
writing in your personal journal from the beginning to the end of
the training. The process of this training will take you to new
places of understanding and this will be encouraged through reading,
writing and other artistic expressions; as well as through asana
and meditation practice. You will be delighted to receive all the
meditation help in the numerous meditation talk CDs of Pir Vilayat
Khan and Pir Zia Inayat Khan that you are given to work with in
your own way. These meditation talks are a huge bonus.
Student Assessment Process
We will graduate students if they have fulfilled 200 hours of training
with us in Seattle , and, or Bali and also submit a video that demonstrates
to us that you can teach Yoga.. We aim to graduate every person
who completes the 200 hour training with us. Know that you automatically
receive 20 hours of home study credit with us if you study for 180
actual hours with us. We wish to make sure that you will be able
to safely conduct a Yoga class and also demonstrate that you have
a thorough enough knowledge of Yoga to be a good Yoga teacher. We
will give each person feedback on their teaching technique.

models the poses to exquisite perfection and it is quite captivating
to watch her move when she practices yoga. Her supportive way of
instructing helps students to feel good about their practice. Between
her strong teaching voice, her poetic self and her charismatic personality
you can well imagine that she leaves a profoundly positive impression
on those around her. Ki is in great demand as a teacher and as a
friend.
Bob Smith, author YOGA FOR A NEW AGE
Bob Smith is the author of YOGA FOR A NEW AGE (Prentice-Hall, 1982
and Smith Productions, 1986) and has been teaching Yoga for 31 years.
Bob has run a private Yoga studio in the Seattle area since 1977,
has conducted workshops throughout various parts of the U.S. , Canada
, Mexico and Indonesia for more than 15 years. He has drawn from
the Iyengar tradition, from Pattabhi Jois' Ashtanga Yoga system,
from many years of study with Marie Svoboda, from a solid background
in athletics and from the world of dance. From all these systems,
Bob has developed a unique style of teaching that combines classical
Hatha Yoga asana with partner work (including massage) and breath
and energy awareness. There seems to be a lot of heart behind his
teaching - some of this derives from his 35+ years of Sufi meditation
practice, some derives from his love of practicing Yoga, some derives
from his desire to be of service to others as a Yoga instructor,
some derives from his partnering with Ki, and some derives from
his desire to be of service to the Highest Truth possible.
In addition to a strong Hatha Yoga practice, Bob has deeply explored
meditation for the past 35 years (particularly with Pir Vilayat
Khan and the Sufi tradition). He is a good pranayama and meditation
teacher because he has practiced a lot. The meditations he leads
are numerous indeed and will include: breathing exercises, energy
balancing, visualization, mapping the territory of consciousness
and practices with light. The meditations will draw on Buddhist,
Sufi, Yogic and Christian wisdom, as well as earth based spirituality.
Ki and Bob are both adept meditators.
Ki and Bob have a wealth of information to share and the seamless
way they instruct together has a profound effect upon students of
theirs. Ki and Bob were married in two ceremonies in the spring
of 2002 – the first being a full moon marriage ceremony in
Bali in late April and then, again, one in Seattle one month later.
They happily share their intimate life with one another and happily
share their Yoga life with one and all.
