Pir Vilayat Khan's Meditation CDs Series I

Pir Vilayat Khan was a great spiritual being who led the Sufi Order of the West until his death in 2004. His son, Pir Zia, is presently the head of this order. Pir Vilayat was an internationally known lecturer and meditation leader who traveled extensively throughout the world as a Sufi meditation teacher. He is a very inspiring being who carries forward the universal message in which he borrows from all the great traditions in his meditations. He is a mystic who was well educated by Western standards and able to map the territory of consciousness in a very thorough way. The meditations of Pir Vilayat will take you into realms you have not been to before and explain how all the planes of awareness form a beautiful tapestry. He maps out this territory in a very captivating way and we hope his life work is carried forward to you in these meditation CDs.

Pir Vilayat Khan's father was Hazrat Inayat Khan, the great Sufi leader who brought Sufism to the West in the early 1900's. After his father's death in 1926,Vilayat lived with his mother and siblings in France and England and was educated there. After WWII he spent much time in India , learning meditation techniques from many different teachers. From 1975 – 2004 there were more than 5,000 hours of his meditation talks recorded – almost all via audio cassette form. They are just now being digitized, one CD at a time. Pir Vilayat's meditations will take you into states of awareness that will blow your mind. He is rich with stories, practices, and brilliance. He built on his father's legacy by updating practices and meditations in the light of all the new developments of new understandings in the fields of meditation, religious practice, and science. He teaches his students techniques of meditation drawn from yoga, Buddhism, Islam, Jewish and Christian tradition, Zoroastrianism, and earth based spirituality – all as a part of Sufism. Sufism emphasizes living in the world and learning how to meditate with open eyes while being effective in the world. Once you start listening and meditating with him you will likely want to keep meditating with him. We proudly present you the “The Foundational Meditation CDs of Pir Vilayat – Series I: 1975 – 1986” and “The Foundational Meditation CDs of Pir Vilayat Khan – Series II: 1975 - 1986”.

Please recognize that the recordings were made in all kinds of unusual situations in which Pir Vilayat was speaking to an audience, with a not too great amplifying and recording situation. Know that the depth of the information could only have come out of the particular meditation settings that they were recorded in and it was the students there, at the time, who drew the information out of him. Please accept the quality of each CD meditation as our best effort to digitize Pir Vilayat Khan - from the old recording equipment of the time, when audio cassette tapes were the way to capture the meditations. Each CD has its own perfection and its sound quality flaws as well. The material contained within the CDs is priceless. The pristine glory of Pir Vilayat comes through the imperfection and flaws of these CDs.

My name is Bob Smith and I am a yoga instructor who is mainly based out of the Hatha Yoga Center in Seattle , WA - I was the main digitizer of these 28 CD offerings. I had great passion for this project because I believe Pir Vilayat's message must be carried forward in these times. There are many more CD offerings to be made in the future. I wish to acknowledge that without great help from Mikhail Horowitz (Pir Vilayat's right hand man for 30 years), Ki McGraw (my radiantly beautiful wife and helper of this project so many ways) and Dallas Guier (who did all the final editing for each and every CD) these CDs would not have happened. Of course, the words are purely Pir Vilayat Khan's, and the message is that of Sufism. These Pir Vilayat Khan CDs are copyright of the Sufi Order of the West.

Foundational Meditation CDs of Pir Vilayat Khan Series I
(Meditation talks from 1975 – 1986)

1) The Four Purification Breaths 60 ½ minutes

The four purification breaths (purification by earth, water, fire, and air) is one of the first practices given to initiates of the Sufi Order. In this CD Pir Vilayat Khan covers baptism with each of the elements. It is a cleansing of the body and mind to the listener as you are guided through beautiful imagery and that is brought into the practical. Mother earth is discussed as the great absorber, as is the crucial relationship of our lives with the planet. How to increase magnetism by reabsorbing the pollutants of our psyche is discussed. The eternal waters of life are discussed during baptism with water and this leads to the main meditation of the Sufis - how to bring spirit down. How to transmute fire into light is looked into. The feeling of freedom and the spaciousness of air is meditated upon. It is the first practice that Pir O-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan gave initiates when he walked the earth and it is the first offering of the series.

2) Working with the Elemental Forces – Fire Highlighted 54 ½ minutes

In this CD Pir Vilayat discusses the elemental forces of earth, water, fire, air and ether. He draws from the wisdom of his father, Pir O-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan, in looking at different types of people as having different elemental leanings - with the predominate elemental force of one's being turning a person's way of being in a particular direction, depending on the elemental force. These reflective thoughts are drawn from his father's wisdom – it is not an astrological discussion, but one of ancient elemental force wisdom from all sources. In the body of the CD Pir Vilayat talks about the elemental force of fire and its many dimensions. He speaks of dervishes of the Sufi tradition who are full of fire and know how to use this force wisely in their life. He talks about how to transmute fire into light. The third and fourth chakras are discussed as a key part of the process in the transmutation of fire into light. All chakras are looked into. Pir Vilayat lays down the foundation of one of the most important practices of the Sufis – working with light.

3) Contemplation Upon the Divine Qualities 58 ½ minutes

Pir Vilayat gets to the fun stage of meditation in this CD by contemplating upon the Divine Qualities. He sets the stage by getting us into the consciousness of other living entities. He contemplates upon animals, plants, minerals. As we contemplate upon another we can love this person because we know how it feels to be this person. Eventually this leads us into seeing the higher qualities in this person as they might come through. The Sufi sees the Divine qualities coming through a person or a tree or any other living form. The last half of this meditation he goes over many different divine qualities and how they show up in nature, animals and people. Some of these qualities are divine power, divine beauty, insight, compassion, love, truth, joy, majesty, splendor, purity, authenticity, peace and many more qualities. All these qualities are within us and we can find them through the stories and examples of this kind of quality coming through that Pir Vilayat relays in this meditation.

4) The Scope of the Breath 40 minutes

Do consciously what you have been doing unconsciously is looked into in this meditation by Pir Vilayat. There is an overall look at the importance of the breath; however, this is more a meditation on the inhalation and exhalation of the divine being than a CD that gives specific breathing practices. It is a foundational CD that gives the framework of thinking that the Sufis are working from. Pir Vilayat guides us into looking for that which transpires behind that which appears. The multidimensionality of reality is explored. All chakras are worked with, and reflection upon how each chakra functions like a kind of brain and how consciousness operates through the chakras. He speaks of the transcendental continuity beyond the arrow of time and goes into a transcendental meditation. He would like each of us to emerge like a butterfly from its cocoon and open our wings and fly.

5) Attunement to Shiva, Buddha, Melchizedek and Christ 63 ½ minutes

This is an early version of Pir Vilayat's reflections upon the Masters that Pir Vilayat and his father, Pir O-Murshid, both focused on a lot in their teachings. It has a nice introduction to Sufi thought about the student – teacher relationship. How Islam and Sufism differ on the relationship to art is talked about. There are some nice stories about the importance of art told. The image is used as a stepping stone and in the body of CD, Pir Vilayat leads us into a meditation upon Shiva, Buddha, Melchizedek and Christ. This is far more than a look at these masters, however, it is a look at the whole of life. Each master is very carefully looked into and described. The figures who were also key figures in the lives of Shiva, Buddha, Melchizedek and Christ are also talked about. The divine attributes that come through these great beings can come through our being – this is the meditation. These beings as living inside of us is something we need to experience as a possibility right now. It is simply beautiful in its scope and clarity.

6) Karma, Fate & Destiny 43 ½ minutes

The subject matters of the name of this offering are all carefully covered by Pir Vilayat, who draws heavily upon his father's wisdom on the matter. It is a fascinating reflection upon the impact that one can have on the circumstances and happenings of events around one or not have. Karma, our fate and our destiny are intertwined with the Divine programming and yet the way we grow into our potentialities as humans certainly does have some say in how our destiny plays out. It is possible to develop a certain kind of mastery in which the people and events around us shape themselves somewhat around our sense of purpose. The key to mastery lies in how we live our everyday lives, and how we deal with the challenges of our life. As we open to the divine guidance, this helps us align with the divine will, and if we can keep doing this then our fate and destiny truly is in the hands of God. This is a very practical tape that talks about how to transmute anger and other personal emotions into higher emotions, as well as cover the topics of this reflection.

7) Mastery 44 ½ minutes

Pir Vilayat leads us in some breathing practices to help attune us in the first part of the meditation. The pranayama practices are included as a beginning step in working with the idea of mastery. From here he turns to the subject of mastery, and again, draws heavily upon Pir O-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan's thoughts in the matter. Mastery lies in directing the mind for the sake of one's purpose rather than trying to still it – this is the gist of Pir Vilayat's words on the subject matter. Our job is to tame the mind in meditation practice and in everyday life situations. He implores us to recognize the mind as an incredible instrument that can promote creativity, intuitive understanding and direct knowledge from the storehouse of all knowledge. The way the sanyasins of Yoga and the way certain monks of Buddhism use mastery is discussed. Pir Vilayat leads us in a brief Buddhist style of meditation and reflects on how this way of thinking can be brought out into the waking consciousness. Practical everyday issues are looked at and how to deal with them in a masterful way is a big part of this offering. How to transmute personal emotions into higher qualities is the key to this. The archetypes that encircle and support mastery are also talked about. Mastery, in the Sufi way of thinking, is a combination of harnessing the mind and letting creativity flow out at the same time.

8) Discovering Our Real Identity 64 minutes

Pir Vilayat begins with a good description of the breath. There is the sense that the inhalations, exhalations and retentions of breath should be done very consciously throughout this CD, though you as the listener have to discover this. He talks about the swing of a pendulum, about the past and the present, and about the crisis state. Crisis states can be moments of breakthrough if the aspirant opens to divine guidance at this crucial time. Pir Vilayat helps us reflect on our involvement in life and he uses the pendulum swings of the breath as a way to focus on the constancy within change. He goes into a discussion of the chakras as an energy lift. He guides us into states of awareness in which flashes of brilliance come through us and still keeping in mind our place on the planet. He helps us find the countenance of our auras and to reject our roles to find who we really are. The hidden treasure that can be found inside each and everyone of us is meditated upon. Excellence, beauty, truth and an ability to find all the great archetypal qualities are focused upon in this all encompassing reflection.

9) Intention 63 minutes

How to develop intuition is the subject matter of this CD. When dealing with the big issues of our life then we need to go inside to find the answers. We must subject our soul to the test of sincerity is the meditation that Pir Vilayat begins with. The key is being very authentic in all ways of our life so the creative images that come through us is connected with the order and harmony of the universe. The creative imagery that passes through us can be deeply connected to the divine order or these images can be random and not a real intuition that is connected. Pir Vilayat leads us into being the eyes through which God sees and thus allows us to find the archetypes of all beings and types of beings. A flower needs to look at the stars to thrive. We need rise above the earth plane reality and enter the cosmic mass. Being sincere, with pure intentions, while also being aware of yourself as a being of light is how this meditation concludes.

10) Holy Warrior 44 ½ minutes

Pir Vilayat starts with the universe in a state of incandescence. We are pieces of a star that continue to burn. He talks about righteous indignation and outrage when sacredness has been violated. This is an important talk by Pir Vilayat about how to be a holy warrior while on the planet. He gives some very strong words concerning the work that is needed on the planet right now - that of addressing the injustices that are going on all around us right now. He says that we are not fulfilling our purpose unless we are socially active in some kind of manner. It is a time to act wisely by meditating with Pir Vilayat on how to be a warrior for truth in the world. We need to reconcile that the way of the world at this time on the planet is very harsh and cruel in many ways, and yet is the perfect place for God to manifest through humans at the same time. We need to safeguard the Divine Being by helping as many others as we can in whatever way we are called to act. We must be warriors for the truth and help others be able to find their divine status as well. We are like knights of truth who must reconcile this with the gentleness of compassion.

11) Invoking the Masters 67 minutes (with music)

Pir Vilayat begins by asking us to look deep inside to realize we need help in this journey, we need God's help. God comes through the great beings in a very direct way and we can find this attunement by invoking the great beings. In the early stages he takes us on a carefully led journey to India , in search of a great rishi from India . The great being is found and the light essence of the being found inside. From here Pir Vilayat invokes the present essence of the beings of Shiva, Buddha, Abraham, Moses, Elijah, Ezekiel, and Christ. There are other great beings, as well, who are brought up and their qualities brought to life through their living examples. The Jewish prophets are looked into in an in-depth way. Another wonderfully unique element to this CD is that sacred Indian, Jewish and Christian music is used to help invoke their corresponding traditions and the beings that stand represent this tradition. If you were to purchase only one CD from this collection then this should be the one.

12) Building a Temple 61 ½ minutes

A very beautifully led meditation, here Pir Vilayat helps us construct a temple of our own making. He works with the various levels of the temple and carefully constructs a multidimensional temple of sanctity. The guided imagery allows us to construct a temple within that is rich with the makings of any of the great temples we can possibly imagine. The opening at the top of the temple and alter at the heart chakra are embellished until you feel the holy within. Because you have the protection of the multilayered temple you have the opportunity of going deeply within the real work of communing with the Divine. On the way into the temple the demarcation between the sacred and that which lies outside of this realm is worked with. The Divine is brought through very clearly in this inspired meditation.

13) The Path of Light 55 minutes

This is classic Pir Vilayat, reflecting on the light of intelligence. He brings us through the various stages by first discussing how the quality of light can manifest in various beings. The light of the universe can get concentrated into one during the inhale and be dispersed out as you exhale. We absorb light through our aura. The second stage is one in which the Divine light completely moves through one. He looks at scientific views on the matter and how we are intermeshed with the ocean of light that is the universe. He goes through the chakras and the opening of the chakras during breathing practices. Then he leads us into a higher level, as a being of luminous intelligence, rather than an aura of light. He reflects upon this uncreated light and describes it as a light upon a light. He guides us into threading the light through the third eye. He works with the body of light and how we can change ourselves through the discovery of our own eternal countenance. You become aware of always having existed. He finishes with an exercise in which you work with the eternal face of another to help them realize this.

14) Qualities and Wazifas 54 minutes

n Sufism, the divine qualities are brought through one by reflecting upon them and by repeating wazifas. The setting for this meditation is a retreat for representatives of the Sufi Order and this is not intended to be a meditation for the general public. If you are interested in mantra, however, then you will also be interested in this offering of Sufi mantras, wazifas. Pir Vilayat asks you to meditate outside in nature and then goes over a few purification practices. He goes through the divine qualities that come into humans; such as power, grace, compassion, truthfulness, insight, splendor, and on. He also looks at how each of the qualities can come through you, then you find the obstacle in the world that is blocking it from coming through, and you find the way through the obstacle by reflecting on how a particular master would handle the very situation that you are involved in. Stories are told and it is an enlightening look into the Sufi way of using wazifas. Many wazifas are worked with.

Foundational Meditation CDs of Pir Vilayat Khan Series II
(Meditation talks from 1975 – 1986)

15) Relationship to the Teacher 43 ½ minutes (sorry, there is a mechanical fan sound in the background of much of this CD)

The Sufi way of being a teacher is described by Pir Vilayat. The beauty of the Sufi way is to include all teachers from any tradition and to be attuned to that being so that teacher is really able to inspire and guide you. He relays a meditation in getting into the consciousness of another and find the attunement of this being – this being is a great being, a teacher for you. He speaks of the divine majesty and the divine splendor being found inside and how we must work with our everyday problems while in a state of meditation. He goes into the qualities that the teacher can bring forward in the pupil. Working with truth and how to be in the world is explored. How to find that right balance of being in the world and yet able to keep your attunement high. He speaks of communicating energy and the blooming of others around you. He discusses how we must face stress to develop. We can communicate life and see flowers unfurling before us. Sorry, there is a small mechanical sound behind much of this CD; however, the voice is very clear.

16) Channeling the Winds 49 minutes

How to spiral the energy through the channels that circumambulate around the spine is explored early on as a way to strengthen the chakras. The energy spirals clockwise and counterclockwise, up and down the ids and pingala channels along the spine. A powerful meditation that brings you in contact with the flows of energy inside so we can find the light the light within each chakra. Pir Vilayat leads us through many stages in which we work with the Tibetan Buddhist practices of finding the winds helping to light up the inner chambers, along with the opening of the various glands of the body, through visualization. He goes into Tibetan categorization of the emanation body, the dream body and the truth body. He distinguishes each and guides us into the truth body in which the essence of the essence is found. One finds oneself as pure spirit and in the truth body, and yet with an ability to enter any layer necessary. The Tibetan Buddhist focus makes this a unique meditation.

17) Kyrie Eleison & Christie Eleison 61 minutes (with chanting of the above chants)

This meditation calls for some deep soul searching. Pir Vilayat leads us into the emotion of the universe, but we need to take a look at our past actions and behaviors first of all. He helps us examine our conscience and gives many ways to deal with the feelings inside. These feelings include those of having done injustice to another, guilt, anger, resentment, low self esteem and many more of the sticky issues of life. He gives us many wise ways to work with these issues. Ultimately, we need God's help and forgiveness. Pir Vilayat goes into Kyrie Eleison and Christie Eleison as chants for us to do with him. The meaning of each of the Christian chants of asking for God's and Christ's help is carefully developed. A beautiful meditation of forgiveness and blessings.

18) Creativity 72 minutes

This is a compilation of meditations on the subject matter of creativity. It is one of the big subject matters that Pir Vilayat focuses on in all his meditations. Here is one meditation after another on how to open up to the creative flow within. Each meditation is connected to the others and they do build upon each other. Pir Vilayat lays the foundation for developing one's creative imagination. He goes over many practices and into the matter of how to bring creative ways of being into your everyday life. This is an incredible compilation of meditations that finishes with Pir Vilayat having us listen to gongs and open up to the creative landscape of the soul in listening to the sounds of the gongs. You will be carried through an incredible journey in working with this CD.

19) Tuning the Instrument 55 minute

Pir Vilayat's father's father was India 's greatest singer. Pir O-Murshid was one of India 's greatest musicians and had a powerful voice. Pir Vilayat has a love for music that comes through in this reflection upon music and tuning the instrument. Some great stories are told. He starts by talking about the spiritual dimensions of one's being that are of a sacred nature. He speaks of how the Sufi gets in sync with the divine will. Infinity in a finite fact and eternity in a temporal act – perfection in a limited being – these are the some of the meditation considerations. He calls this the definition of the holistic view of spirituality. He goes into the Sufi use of mantra and how the divine power can come through the rishi or the dervish in whatever they do, including chanting or mantra or wazifa. He describes the process of how creativity comes down and how it comes down through music. A favorite subject matter of his is to talk about the great composers and in this meditation he does. The kind of emotion each of the great composers of classical music was attuned to during the creation of their masterpiece is spoken of. He speaks of J.S. Bach and many others and a kind of shine comes over him when he reflects on Bach and many of the other great composers. Tuning yourself through music captures the overall feeling of the offering.

20) Light & the Aura 58 minutes

Light is a key concept of Sufism. Pir Vilayat always focused on light in his meditations. The CD starts a bit abruptly with light above our head; however, it is a very enlightening meditation on the subject matter. It is a series of meditations on light and the aura that are pieced together. Pir Vilayat introduces the aura and how we receive light into our cells. He takes it from here into a series of beautiful descriptive meditations, always with the thought of light behind them. He speaks of the underground system of water lilies, of the implicate and the explicate states of reality, and of the whole universe awakening as your insight. He goes through the chakras and describes some states of conscious arrived at through contemplation upon certain colors and qualities. Eventually he reflects on how the luminous intelligence thrusts it's unborn knowledge into things. It becomes the light that is threaded down as the light that sees. Practices with light are highly regarded by Pir Vilayat and this is the first of a series of many meditation talks on light.

21) Space Age Meditation 62 ½ minutes

In this meditation one's life is reflected upon from the perspective of being in outer space. The limiting confinement of the body – psyche is easily lost as Pir Vilayat guides us on how to have an overview of our life from outer space. A tremendous awakening of humanity is quite possible at this time on the planet. The spirituality of our time must always have the problems of our life in mind as we reach out into these higher vistas. To be fully aware, alert, vibrant and to be able to see oneself in the universe is reflected upon. He guides us into the light of stars and the ocean of light. You awaken to your ability to identify yourself as a vortex within this ocean of light. We wake up to our connectivity to this enormous being of the universe. You see the whole universe as the projection of the symphony of emotions and how the software of the universe works it all out very beautifully. The software serves ecstasy. The way it gets worked out are the devices of the divine being and can see all this. The change in your realization will bring a change to the subtle form of your being.

22) Your Cosmic Identity 48 minutes

In the early morning quietness Pir Vilayat leads a meditation on peace and having a perspective upon one's life. He asks us to take a panoramic view of the various episodes in our life from a cosmic perspective, so it is though there are two of you. You see the curve of your life and how you have been affected by personal dramas, and you also see how your being can affect the situations. As you find your cosmic identity you find that you live in a world of light – a fabric of light - with it's landscapes, structures and cities, and it's beings. You open up to the creative imagery to come through you – your creative imagination. He works with many example to help open us into the landscapes of our soul. He leads us beyond this realm into a realm of pure truth and pure light. We look at our self image and the way we are on the earth from this very high realm. We realize how cosmic our real being is and how limited our personality is. In finding our cosmic identity we know that life on earth will come to be shaped by our new identity. This is taken one step further as we merge with all beings into the total being, with the whole physical universe the body of God. You see yourself completely a part of the fabric of it all. He asks us to look at the universe from the consciousness of God – the kind of illumination that Christ and Buddha realized. It is a beautiful meditation.

23) The Attitude of the Sufi 48 minutes

Pir Vilayat discusses Sufism and the great perplexity of trying to explain it. Sufism does not make sense without God because it all starts with God. The Sufis of all times have been unorthodox in their relationship with any orthodox religion. The Sufis embrace the tradition that God comes into form by manifesting the divine qualities through all beings on the earth. God especially manifests through the great beings of any tradition and this kind of attunement is asked of you. He asks the listener to experience God right down here in you. He speaks of some of the great Sufis of the past. Dervishes of the past are known to have involved themselves right in the middle of life – it is the Sufi way. He speaks of Pir O-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan and his greatness. The whole of life becomes a meditation for the Sufis. It is an enlightening meditation upon Sufism.

24) Presence of the Man of God 53 minutes

This is a compilation of meditations by Pir Vilayat about the teachings of his father, Pir O-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan. In the first meditation he leads us through a prayerful list of ways to touch God and others that are around you – it has a bit of the feeling that the Saint Francis of Assisi “Prayer of Forgiveness” has to it; and this opening reflection is one you will eventually want to write down. In the second meditation Pir Vilayat guides us through the stages of our evolution. He speaks of opening to the divinity of your being which puts you in touch with the child, animal, plant, and mineral worlds. He next goes through the higher planes, stage by stage. He points out the signs of one's progress on the spiritual path. In the next meditation Pir Vilayat defines spirituality as never losing sight of the ideal, even though living up to one's ideal all the time is not really possible. The glory of life is in overcoming limitation – it gives one the wonderful feeling of joy. We are the instrument through which the divine qualities manifest; such as: serenity, joy, peace, light, nobility, truthfulness, compassion and more. Consciousness can have a big breakthrough at a sudden moment so that all things are unlocked through the power of truth coming through. The light that you cast upon the divine qualities that you are triggers off the development of these qualities at the personality level. This is really a CD about Hazrat Inayat Khan's message as continued through Pir Vilayat.

25) In Life – Two Awakenings 64 ½ minutes. The first half of this CD is very clear and the second half is not.

The first half is entitled “In Life” and this is a gem of a meditation. It is a good overview of how to bring our problems into the meditative state and then how to live out the guidance received. Pir Vilayat calls this meditation a rehearsal for life. He leads us into an awareness of the deeper meaning that lies behind the events that are being enacted in our life. Instead of being encapsulated in a certain location and time, we go into the always and everywhere. We become like sanyasins who are disguised in the life of roles we play. Recognizing all the drama that needs to be played out in life, we are able to have a certain zone of silence around us as we do whatever we have come on earth to do. We are aware of the many levels of suffering all around us and the drama of the entire universe, and are able to reconcile this with the perfection of God in manifestation. We are able to find freedom in the midst of action.

The second half is entitled “Two Awakenings” and the sound quality is not great; however, the message of the meditation is. Until we produce a higher quality version this is what we have. The first awakening is the awakening of man - woman into God, and the second awakening is God into man – woman. The second awakening is focused upon and it is really a meditation on creativity. It gives ways to creatively work with our body of light and our dream body. This meditation is a kind of reverie that Pir Vilayat uses for rebirthing oneself, stage by stage. The inner journey of reverie is explored.

26) The Emotion of Light 55 ½ minutes

This is the most unique offering of the 26 CDs in the two foundational series'. The original title for the offering was the Sun of the Sun: the Emotion of Light. The original title tells the story of the meditation. Pir Vilayat leads us to the Sun of the Sun of the Sun and the emotion that lies behind the realm of light and the we become the emotion behind this. Pir Vilayat leads us in a very beautiful meditation throughout this offering. It is unique because in this one offering there are lots of quiet spaces to truly reflect upon the words of Pir Vilayat. For those of you who have wanted more space between the words, this meditation fulfills this desire. If you are looking for a meditation that opens you up to the archeangels and how the forces of light work within the angelic realm then this meditation is for you. Pir Vilayat works with the beings of light on the way down from the lofty state. You keep having space to work with all the imagery he presents throughout this meditation. He compares our normal way of being on the planet with this high attunement and asks us to bring the light of the intelligence through. It is a meditation of becoming intoxicated with light.

27) Alchemy 41 minutes

Pir Vilayat goes through the six alchemical stages of the alchemists of old and how these stages are completely relevant to stages of meditation that one must go through, as well as stages of life that one must go through. The alchemists of old were not really trying to make gold, they were interested in the process of transformation. Dreams and psychological experiences are discussed as stages of the process. It is a fascinating reflection that draws from the wisdom of the ancient alchemists, ancient symbols, and the way in which alchemy and Sufism blend in many ways. In the six stages there is the threesome of dissolving and the threesome of rematerializing matter anew. Each stage is carefully described, with the inner psychological development, or breakdown, being the primary focus of each stage. It is a captivating meditation in which Pir Vilayat stays with the subject matter of alchemy in a complete and thorough way.

28) Breathing Practices for Retreat Setting 52 minutes

his CD is filled with breathing practices for a retreat setting. It starts off with the four purification breaths of the Sufis – purification by earth, water, fire and air. Pir Vilayat moves into an explanation of the inhalation and exhalation of God. The Shalloud practice (the same practice as what yoga calls, yoni mudra) is talked about and the practice done. The practice makes one other worldly and he goes into this. The nine sounds of the universal Om current are briefly discussed. Pir Vilayat tells his own stories of the kind of practices he does each and every day – this includes the practice of Shalloud. Next, he covers the subject matter of pranayama and the Sufi equivalent, Kasab. Using either Kasab or pranayama, the chakras are worked with until the end of the CD. The practices of the last 40 minutes of this breathing practice compilation have an intensity to them that requires you to use this CD only in a retreat setting. These practices are intended to bring one into a lofty, other worldly attunement.

An Overall Look at Pir Vilayat's CDs

Unlike any other human being you have listened to and been inspired by, Pir Vilayat will educate you concerning the process of meditation and how to bring meditation into your everyday life. His rich life has led to many wonderful stories that he relays during the course of these meditations. His genius of drawing on the wisdom of all the great spiritual and scientific traditions is very captivating. He is a delight to listen to and will continue to amaze you at how many ways he finds to reflect out loud about all possible subject matters. The message of Sufism is to bring spirituality right down here into your everyday life.

The equipment used for most of these meditation talks was not the highest quality and the settings for these talks are outdoors or in some public building. The audio cassette tapes had all kinds of problems and we have tried to preserve the pristine quality of this incredible being's message in the CDs offered, but please recognize the CDs were not made in a studio setting and therefore have their sound quality imperfections. One may be very different from another in the series.

Please note that there is no special introduction in most of the meditations and often no official ending. You will find your way through this. It is the body of the material of Pir Vilayat's meditations that is the reason these CDs were made. The message he relays leads you to find the hidden treasure within that desires to be known. May the message of God reach far and wide, illuminating and making the whole of humanity as one single brother-sisterhood in the arms of God.

A Sufi prayer, called, “Khatum”, as interpreted by Hazrat Inayat Khan:

O Thou, Who art the Perfection of Love, Harmony, and Beauty,
The Lord of heaven and earth,
Open our heart, that we may hear Thy Voice, which constantly cometh from within.
Disclose to us Thy Divine Light, which is hidden in our soul that we may know and understand life better.
Most Merciful and Compassionate God, give us Thy great Goodness;
Teach us Thy loving Forgiveness;
Raise us above the distinctions and differences which divide men;
Send us the Peace of Thy Divine Spirit,
And unite us all in Thy Perfect Being.

Amen
